WHAT'S NEW?

HIRE THE GURU
"Thanks very, very much for your great work last night!!! The sound was excellent, natural, and easy."

John Schott and the band

"Allen's attention to detail and patience elevated the quality of our concert production for Zakir Hussain and Alam Khan, two master level artists of north India. The intricacy and rich tonality of classical north Indian music, particularly tabla, often get lost when amplified on a sound system. Allen's calm approach, appropriate application of sound technology, and professionalism brought the delicacy and intensity of the music to life for the audience. Every tone emanating from the instruments was clear and balanced. The audience showered us with compliments on the superior sound. The credit goes to Allen."

Allen,

The sound was great tonight. We've never had better: clear, natural, balanced, punchy, good to listen to.

Thanks,
Jody Stecher

"I've been working with Allen since 1990 in a wide variety of concert situations--intimate chamber concerts, lofty cathedrals, performing arts centers of every shape and size, and outdoor amphitheatres. The complex resonance and overtones of the harp can be an engineer's nightmare, but thanks to Allen's skills one can hear the natural beauty of the wide variety of harps presented in our Festival. He has consistently produced a gorgeous, natural sound out of all the many instruments musicians that we present. I would never do a show without him behind the board!

"I have had the pleasure of working on several occasions with Allen Lam at the controls. I consistently found him to be responsive and aware throughout the shows. He has a clear understanding both of the sonic needs of acoustic instruments, and is very knowledgeable and, more importantly, fearless about using microphones instead of only pickups. I don't like requesting "corrections" from the stage during a show; with Allen at the desk, I never need to, and it's his responsiveness during soundcheck that makes this possible."

Allen Lam is one of the best sound engineers in the Bay Area. I first worked with Allen at the Fairmont Hotel a number of years ago, and was completely satisfied with his work. I have also observed Allen at work while gigging with Lavay Smith And Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, and he is equally adept at any size band or orchestra. Allen has a thorough understanding of what is needed in sound amplification, and I recommend him highly.

Don Neely and I (Carla Normand) have had the pleasure of working with Allen Lam for over ten years. We have the ten-piece Royal Society Jazz Orchestra, which includes two vocalists, three saxophones, two trumpets,a trombone, piano, guitar, drums and stand up bass. Allen is not only an excellent sound technician but a fine sound artist. He has a keen esthetic sense of how an accoustical instrument should sound and he accomplishes the most natural, full and pleasing sound that I have ever experienced.

Many times throughout our careers we have had to endure sound men and women who were only experienced with rock and electronic music. They had no understanding of how a trumpet, a saxophone or an acoustic guitar should naturally sound. Often, with these sound people, the drums are greatly amplified, to the detriment of the entire orchestra. Other times the high end is turned up so high that it hurts ones ears with its piercing stridency and distortion. Imbalances like these and many others have never happened with Allen. After working with him only once, we no longer had to tell him what we wanted-he already knew and had done it!

Since then we have had the pleasure of working with them on many events, including a very high-profile event honoring Prince Andrew at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Franciso.

As a vocalist with the band, I can honestly say that my enjoyment of singing is greatly enhanced by their ability to create a full, warm tone with my voice. The monitor mix is always perfectly adjusted so that I can hear myself with clarity but without harshness. Allen uses high-quality equipment which is another reason he is able to acheive wonderful results. Using such fine equipment shows how much he cares about their clients and their work.

We have always had complete confidence in Allen ability to make our orchestra sound its best-in all different situations and locations.

He's the best!

Allen
Thanks so much from all the Keepers for a job well done. The sound was perfect...and nice working with you.

Allen,

Just a quick note to thank you for the great job you did on the sound at my gig at Freight and Salvage on 09/26/00.

I have been playing guitar professionally for over 30 years and you are the first sound engineer who listened to the sound of my guitar prior to making your settings on the console. I felt this added greatly to my performance and to a successful evening for the people that paid their money to hear me.

I highly reccomend you to anyone and hope to work with you again in March of 2001.
